THROUPLE WEDDING FAQ
What?
So yeah, this is going to be a full-on wedding, with all the bells and whistles. Ceremony, reception, dancing, the works. Consider it like any other wedding you go to.
Is it legal for three people to get married?
It is not. But fun fact: Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts allow domestic partnerships for three or more people! And as far as throuples go, in California it is legal for three people to be on a birth certificate and have legal parentage. So the twins are in good hands (six hands to be exact).
How do we feel about three-person marriage not being legal?
Not great! But we’re still looking forward to celebrating our commitment to each other in the same way couples do. Hopefully someday it will be legal, but until then consider us hitched in every way.
How do you want to be referred to after you get married?
Partners would be great! But it’s also okay if you call us wives; just do so while shaking a fist at the antiquated marriage system that does not legally allow us to be so.
What is the difference between polyamory and polygamy?
Glad you asked! Polyamory is engaging in multiple romantic relationships with the consent of everyone involved. Polygamy is one person (usually a man) having multiple spouses (wives) and it tends to be… what’s the word? Icky. So basically, one should be outlawed (and is??) and the other is beautiful and evolved.
So wait, you're a throuple? Explain.
Yes, we are a throuple, also known as a triad. We are all equally in this. We like to say there are four relationships at play: 1) Rachel, Laura, & Julia. 2) Laura & Julia. 3) Julia & Rachel. 4) Rachel & Laura. I know what you're thinking; that sounds exhausting! It is! But it's worth it for all the love and happiness.
Can I also marry you?
No, three is enough for us, but thank you for your interest. How flattering.
